Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is a type of vasculitis characterized by palpable purpura and associated with arthritis, glomerulonephritis, and vasculitis of the bowel manifesting as colicky pain or melena. It is more frequent in children, but can affect adults. HSP is associated with deposition of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the glomeruli, cutaneous vasculature, and vasculature of the gastrointestinal tract. Even so, most classification systems for vasculitis do not use IgA deposition as a diagnostic marker for HSP, with the exception of the system developed by the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR).
