Patients with dermatomyositis are known to have an increased risk for internal malignancy, but until now, cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) has not been linked to increased risk for cancer.
In this case-control study from Sweden, investigators matched 3,663 CLE patients with 10,989 controls of similar age, sex, and location of residence from the general population and checked all participants against the National Swedish Cancer and Swedish Cause of Death registers. Among CLE patients, 183 cancers occurred (hazard ratio, 1.8); the increase in cancer risk remained significant after controlling for prior or subsequent systemic LE diagnoses.
