In the continuing search for genetic determinants of multifactorial diseases, genome-wide association studies are finding wide application in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD). These studies use millions of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as signposts to flag areas of the genome that vary with disease phenotypes. Paternoster and colleagues conducted a two-stage meta-analysis consisting of a discovery phase (in 16 European cohorts of 5,606 individuals with AD and 20,565 controls) and a replication phase (in 10 European cohorts of 5,419 individuals with AD and 19,833 controls).
