TH2 helper T cells modulate reagenic allergic reactions. TH2 cells secrete the interleukins IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13, and, it was thought until recently, IL-9. Now we know that IL-9 is secreted by a specific subset of CD4+ helper T cells called (logically) TH9 cells. Regulated by a unique transcription factor called PU.1, TH9 cells may have important roles in eliciting the allergic airway inflammation leading to asthma.
To define the function of TH9 cells in disease, investigators studied the peripheral blood of atopic and nonatopic donors.
