Infantile hemangioma (IH) growth is characterized by rapid proliferation over the first 6 to 9 months of age, followed by slow involution over years. More recently, authors of a prospective cohort study have concluded that 80% of hemangioma growth occurs by age 3 months, with 80% of IHs completing their growth by age 5 months. Unfortunately, infants with IH are generally not seen by a specialist until 3 to 5 months of age. Some hemangiomas require treatment intervention for complications (e.g., ulceration, airway compromise, associated anomalies, or disfigurement), and early assessment and treatment is preferred.
