PDL is safe, even when used in very young patients and with short treatment intervals.
Port-wine stains (PWSs) affect 0.3% to 0.5% of newborns, and pulsed-dye laser (PDL) remains the treatment of choice. These authors attempted to find the optimal interval between PDL treatments for PWS in infants.
In this retrospective study in 24 infants, the researchers compared the safety and effectiveness of a series of five treatments performed 2, 3, or 4 weeks apart. Age at first treatment ranged from 1 to 16 weeks; average age at first treatment in the 2-, 3-, and 4-week interval groups was 5.25 weeks, 4.25 weeks, and 7.38 weeks, respectively. All three regimens induced significant clearance. Complete or near-complete clearance was seen in 75% of patients in the 2-week group, 87.5% of the 3-week group, and 37.5% of the 4-week group. Si…
