Current guidelines for colorectal cancer screening recommend sigmoidoscopy at 5-year intervals. However, results of the Kaiser case-control study of sigmoidoscopy suggested that the protective effect of sigmoidoscopy did not diminish during the 10-year study. In the present study, researchers performed a population-based, case-control study of all new cases of colorectal cancer in 3 Washington counties, using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry.
Of 2185 eligible case patients identified from October 1998 through February 2002, 79% (1726) were successfully contacted and compared with 1324 age- and sex-matched controls. All participants completed a structured 50-minute telephone interview.
