Cancer risk is the primary concern for patients with Barrett esophagus (BE). Epidemiologic evidence suggests that acid exposure increases the risk for esophageal adenocarcinoma. Therefore, potent acid suppression has the potential to modify cancer risk in patients with BE. In this retrospective study, researchers compared the development of dysplasia in BE patients who had and had not receive acid suppressive therapy after their BE diagnosis.
Among 236 newly diagnosed consecutive BE patients, 56 developed dysplasia (14 had high-grade dysplasia) during 1170 patient-years of follow-up (annual incidence rate, 4.7%).
