Cross-sectional data support a positive association between overweight/obesity and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). However, few data are available on the association between body-mass index (BMI) and GERD in normal-weight individuals.
To evaluate this issue, researchers conducted a cross-sectional analysis among randomly selected participants in the Nurses’ Health Study. Women reported their height and weight on routine biennial questionnaires and then completed supplemental questionnaires on the frequency, severity, and duration of GERD symptoms (heartburn and acid regurgitation).
