Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is clearly the hot topic in the recent esophageal literature (Journal Watch Gastroenterology Mar 28 2006 and Journal Watch Gastroenterology Jul 12 2005). EoE is an important cause of dysphagia and food impaction in adults. The characteristic finding for establishing a diagnosis is an abnormally large number of eosinophils infiltrating the squamous epithelium.
To identify the optimum location and number of biopsies required to establish this diagnosis, researchers in Chicago evaluated the variability of histopathologic findings in adults with EoE diagnoses (based on a criterion of 15 eosinophils/high power field [eos/hpf]).
