The prevalence of Barrett esophagus (BE) in adult patients with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is about 10%. Because no specific signs or symptoms are known to signal BE development, most adult cases are diagnosed as prevalent, and age at onset is unknown. Estimates of the prevalence of GER in pediatric patients have been derived from small case series, which suggest that it is about 2.3% in 3- to 17-year-old children and 5% to 8% in adolescents older than 10 years. An understanding of what triggers BE development in children with GER probably would be helpful in determining triggering mechanisms in adults.
