Researchers have intensively investigated the use of computer-aided detection (CAD), in which a computer highlights potential polyps for further examination, in association with computed tomography colonography. To determine the direct effects of CAD on performance characteristics, researchers recruited 10 readers at four U.S. and three European centers who were trained in CT evaluation but who did not have special expertise in colonography. The readers interpreted images from 107 patients, first without CAD and then, 2 months later, with CAD.
With colonoscopy and expert CT readings as the gold standard, 60 patients had 142 polyps. CAD improved per-patient sensitivity for seven readers, but one had a decrease in specificity. On average, CAD …
