Most formulations of mesalamine are taken three to four times daily, which can create problems with patient adherence. However, the drug can be taken once daily with Multi-Matrix System (MMX) technology, which provides a high-strength, delayed-release dose. The MMX delivery system uses lipophilic and hydrophilic matrices enclosed within a gastro-resistant, pH-dependent coating. Initial release of the drug occurs at a pH of 7 or higher in the terminal ileum. As the gastro-resistant coating disintegrates, intestinal fluid comes into contact with the hydrophilic matrix and causes swelling and formation of an outer viscous gel mass.
