The U.S. Multisociety Task Force on Colorectal Cancer recommends that 90% of all colonoscopies should be complete and that 95% of screening colonoscopies should be complete to the cecum (Journal Watch Gastroenterology Mar 11 2003). Investigators in Ontario conducted a large population-based analysis of rates of incomplete colonoscopy from 1999 through 2003.
Researchers identified 331,608 individuals who underwent first colonoscopies. Of these, 13.1% were incomplete. The strongest predictor of incomplete exams was performance in private offices (24.6% incomplete exams; odds ratio, 3.57, compared with performance in academic or community hospitals).
