Symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease are exceedingly common during pregnancy. Heartburn occurs during an estimated 30% to 50% of pregnancies, with prevalence approaching 80% in some populations. Although gestational GERD symptoms typically resolve after delivery, a long-standing question is whether the presence of these symptoms during pregnancy predisposes the patient to GERD in the future.
