Previous studies have suggested a potential benefit for cap-fitted colonoscopy in improving visualization of the colonic mucosa during colonoscopy exams (e.g. Am J Gastroenterol 2007; 102:75). Cap fitting refers to placement of hoods, such as endoscopic band-ligation or endoscopic mucosal-resection devices, on the tips of colonoscopes. The most effective caps are soft and transparent to improve visualization and maximize safety. Clear caps can be flexed against haustral folds to flatten the folds and expose mucosa on proximal surfaces.
