Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an inherited colon cancer syndrome that also is associated with duodenal and gastric polyps. Researchers report that fundic-gland polyps (FGPs) occur in 20% to 84% of patients with FAP. Formerly, such polyps were believed to have little potential for malignant transformation, but reports of high-grade dysplasia and gastric cancer in this setting have prompted some to rethink whether fundic-gland polyps confer cancer risk in FAP patients (J Pediatr Gastroenterol Nutr 2001; 32:215).
