Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) was once thought to be an entirely pediatric disease, but its prevalence in adults — particularly in young men who present with dysphagia or food-bolus obstruction — is now widely recognized (JW Gastroenterol Mar 28 2006). To date, most studies of EoE have been relatively small and subject to referral or selection biases. Thus, several epidemiologic and clinical questions remain: Is there geographic variability in EoE? Is the disease limited to certain age groups? Would previously reported epidemiologic characteristics of the disease vary across a larger study population?
