Performing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) with a standard duodenoscope in a patient with a surgically altered intestinal anatomy can be technically impossible because the papilla or the pancreatic and biliary intestinal anastomosis might be beyond the reach of the endoscope. Percutaneous procedures or repeat surgical procedures might then be necessary. Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) might be an alternate method of performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in these patients.
