Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is the gold standard for detecting esophageal varices, but this procedure is relatively invasive and is not always well tolerated. Although a variety of potential noninvasive methods of detection have been explored, such as laboratory assessment and radiologic imaging, none has been shown to be equivalent to EGD (Am J Gastroenterol 2006; 101:2520).
