Helicobacter pylori infection has a host of adverse consequences, ranging from chronic gastritis to peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. The worldwide prevalence of H. pylori infection has been estimated to be 50%, but more recent data show a low and declining prevalence of infection in developed countries and a higher prevalence in developing countries. Knowing the population prevalence of H. pylori infection allows clinicians to estimate the likelihood of disease and modify their diagnostic approach to specific disorders.
