Lumiracoxib is a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor that confers a lower risk for upper gastrointestinal bleeding than do nonselective nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs; JW Gastroenterol Sep 14 2007). Does it also confer a lower risk for small-bowel injury?
Investigators randomized 152 healthy individuals to receive lumiracoxib (100 mg daily), naproxen (500 mg twice daily) with omeprazole (20 mg daily), or placebo for 16 days. Small-bowel injury was assessed by capsule endoscopy, lactulose:L-rhamnose permeability, and fecal calprotectin levels before and after exposure to the study drugs. The study was funded by the maker of lumiracoxib.
