Endoscopic therapy is gaining ground over esophagectomy as the preferred treatment for patients who have Barrett esophagus with high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or early esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). However, studies supporting the use of endoscopic therapy have been limited by incomplete data capture and short follow-up (JW Gastroenterol Sep 26 2008).
To further evaluate the efficacy of endoscopic therapy, researchers prospectively studied 349 patients in Germany with BE; 61 had HGD and 288 had EAC.
