Because surveillance colonoscopy has proven benefits in patients with chronic ulcerative colitis, it is also recommended in patients with chronic Crohn colitis. However, its use in this latter population has not been well studied. In 2001, investigators from Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City reported their experience with 259 patients with chronic Crohn colitis who underwent surveillance colonoscopy between 1980 and 1998 (JW Gastroenterol Apr 2 2001). Now, they have updated these findings with data from 1998 through mid-2005.
