Functional dyspepsia is a poorly defined symptom complex with limited treatment options. Dysmotility-like dyspepsia is characterized by a lack of symptoms that would otherwise suggest peptic ulcers or gastroesophageal reflux disease. In pilot studies, tegaserod (a selective serotonin type 4–receptor agonist) improved dysmotility-like functional-dyspepsia symptoms in the lower gastrointestinal tract in women.
To further evaluate the efficacy of tegaserod, investigators in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and South Africa performed two identical randomized trials in 2667 women with dysmotility-like dyspepsia (using the ROME II definition).
