Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a life-threatening condition. Unfortunately, successful treatment of a bleeding episode does not prevent recurrent bleeding, which can occur in 3% to 40% of patients within 1 year, depending on the individual clinical situation.
To further evaluate the incidence of recurrent UGIB, as well as risk factors and protective factors, investigators examined information from a large, primary care database in the U.K. A total of 1287 patients in the database received UGIB diagnoses between 2000 and 2005 and were followed from 2 months after presentation until death or the end of the study period (mean, 3 years).
