High-definition colonoscopes have been shown to improve detection of flat adenomas (Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol 2006; 4:349). This trial is the first randomized study to compare the ability of high-definition, wide-angle colonoscopes with that of standard colonoscopes to detect colorectal neoplasia.
The researchers randomized 620 patients to colonoscopies with either high-definition, wide-angle colonoscopes or standard instruments. Time to reach the cecum was slightly longer for standard colonoscopes than for high-definition colonoscopes (8.9 vs. 8.2 minutes; P=0.055).
