Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is increasingly used for the resection of early gastric cancer and gastric adenomas. Acid suppression with a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) is commonly used after ESD on the assumption that PPIs speed healing of the created mucosal defects. However, factors affecting the success and optimal duration of PPI therapy have not been established.
Investigators in South Korea studied 56 consecutive patients who received 4 weeks of PPI treatment with pantoprazole (40 mg daily) after undergoing complete ESD for adenoma or early gastric cancer. Posttreatment endoscopy assessed degree of healing of ESD-induced defects, which was defined as changes in the diameters and areas of ulcers from baseline measurements.
