Flexible sigmoidoscopy was the first screening test to gain strong evidence of efficacy in preventing mortality from colorectal cancer. Case-control studies and a small controlled trial from Norway have shown that flexible sigmoidoscopy screening followed by colonoscopy for any polyp detected reduces the incidence of and mortality from colorectal cancer. The current trend toward colonoscopy screening has led to a decline in the use of flexible sigmoidoscopy screening.
