Endoscopic screening for Barrett esophagus (BE) has become a standard of care, despite the paucity of data demonstrating any survival benefit (JW Gastroenterol Apr 18 2008). Concern exists that BE could be missed during the screening of patients with erosive esophagitis (EE), given that BE diagnosis depends on histologic confirmation of specialized columnar metaplasia. In this retrospective study, investigators described the proportion of patients with EE who later received a diagnosis of BE during upper endoscopic evaluation.
