Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with increased risk for gastric cancer. Whether this risk can be reduced by eradicating the infection remains unclear, as prospective studies have been limited by small numbers and infrequent outcomes.
Investigators performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of H. pylori treatment and subsequent risk for gastric cancer. A broad literature search identified 5488 studies, but only 7 met the predefined inclusion criteria. One of these studies was excluded from the primary analysis because of differences in study design, patient characteristics, and outcome evaluation.
