Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. But, information on the epidemiology of PLA in the U.S. is lacking. To evaluate PLA incidence and mortality in the U.S., investigators reviewed records of >17,000 PLA patients in the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 1994 through 2005.
During the study period, incidence of PLA increased significantly from 2.7 to 4.1 per 100,000 population (overall incidence, 3.6 per 100,000). However, in-hospital mortality from PLA (the primary study outcome) remained the same (5.6%) and was associated with older age, comorbidities (including cancer, renal failure, and cirrhosis), and Medicaid or Medicare insurance.
