Functional dyspepsia (FD) has complex pathophysiology and is often difficult to treat. Some patients with FD have abnormal gastric motility, a condition that has been treated with some success using electrical stimulation therapy. Would this approach be effective for FD?
To find out, investigators in Turkey conducted a prospective, randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled study of transcutaneous gastric electrical stimulation therapy — using a vacuum interferential current (IFC) device — in 44 patients who met Rome III criteria for FD and had negative evaluations that included endoscopy.
