Prior epidemiological studies have suggested an association between proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) use and hip fractures (JW Gastroenterol Oct 3 2008 and JW Gastroenterol Jan 5 2007). The mechanism for this result is thought to be related to long-term suppression of gastric acid, which can reduce intestinal absorption of calcium and thereby impair bone homeostasis. To further examine fracture risks associated with PPI use, investigators conducted a prospective, population-based study involving 130,487 postmenopausal women (age range, 50–79) with no history of hip fracture.
