The incidence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has risen dramatically during the last decade, and the relapse rate for this infection can be high. Proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) use has been associated with excess risk for infections such as CDI.
To determine whether PPI use is associated with risk for recurrent CDI, investigators conducted a retrospective study of patients identified from the New England Veterans Healthcare System from October 2003 through September 2008. A total of 1166 patients (97% male; median age, 74) with CDI documented by toxin assays were treated with metronidazole or vancomycin.
