In emergency settings, providers must identify patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) who are at high risk for rebleeding and require urgent endoscopic therapy. To evaluate whether video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is effective for this purpose, investigators conducted a manufacturer-supported, prospective, randomized, controlled study involving 24 consecutive patients who presented to an emergency department with UGIB. Half of the patients underwent VCE, whereby images (captured at 18 frames per second by the PillCam ESO device) were assessed in real time and reviewed afterward for accuracy. The other patients received standard care, which included endoscopy within 24 hours.
