Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) — commonly prescribed as first-line pain medications in orthopedic trauma care — increase the likelihood of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. This risk is exacerbated by several factors, including age ≥65, major comorbidities, history of peptic ulcer disease, and use of use of oral steroids or anticoagulation agents. Although multiple guidelines advise the administration of gastroprotective drugs for patients with one or more risk factors for NSAID complications, adherence to this recommendation is variable.
