Multiple guidelines have been published on endoscopic therapy for patients with acute nonvariceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). But, are clinicians complying with these recommendations?
To determine how much variation exists in the endoscopic management of bleeding peptic ulcers, investigators reviewed the records of patients in the Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative database who underwent upper endoscopy for UGIB during a 5-year period. The researchers evaluated prevalence of peptic ulcer and characteristics, endoscopic therapies used, incidence of repeat endoscopy, and variability in treatment by practice site type (community practice or HMO, academic, and Veterans Affairs or military).
