Although eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is increasingly recognized in both children and adults, an optimal treatment strategy has yet to be defined (JW Gastroenterol Sep 3 2010). The preferred approach has been to use a topical steroid, such as fluticasone propionate (a corticosteroid), administered with an aerosolized metered-dose inhaler; systemic steroids are also effective, but these agents are rarely needed. Oral viscous budesonide (OVB) suspension has also been shown to significantly improve EoE symptoms as well as endoscopic and histologic features in children.
