Immunochemical fecal occult blood testing (FOBT), also known as fecal immunochemical testing (FIT), has outperformed guaiac-based FOBT as a colorectal cancer (CRC) screening method in several previous studies, including randomized controlled trials in the Netherlands (JW Gastroenterol Mar 5 2010). Now, researchers in South Korea have compared Hemoccult II guaiac-based FOBT with OC-Sensa Micro FIT for analyzing three stool samples from each of 770 consecutively enrolled, average-risk patients who were undergoing screening colonoscopy. The immunochemical test is marketed in Asia by Eiken Chemical, which partly funded this study, and in the U.S. by Polymedco.
