Helicobacter pylori infection and aspirin use are independent risk factors for upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB). But, how these risks might interact is unclear.
To address this issue, investigators in the U.K. performed a systematic review of the influence of H. pylori infection on the risk for UGIB in patients taking aspirin. The researchers searched MEDLINE and Embase databases for clinical trials that assessed patients for aspirin use, UGIB, and H. pylori infection. The initial search produced 414 articles, of which 37 were reviewed and 13 (10 cohort studies, 2 randomized control trials, and 1 case-control study) were included for analysis.
