Current guidelines recommend that colorectal cancer (CRC) screening using fecal occult blood tests (FOBTs) should be performed with fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) rather than guaiac-based FOBTs. However, we do not know whether the use of low-dose aspirin — which is common in the target population for CRC screening — increases false-positive rates for FITs (as it does with guaiac-based FOBTs) because of aspirin-induced upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
