Upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) is a common cause of hospitalization and is associated with substantial mortality. To identify UGIB incidence and fatality rates and trends, investigators in Wales retrospectively reviewed inpatient records of 24,421 admissions for UGIB from 1999 to 2007 that were linked to mortality data.
Results were as follows:
The overall incidence of hospitalization for UGIB was 134 per 100,000 population; incidence was higher among men than women (153 vs. 117 per 100,000).
Incidence was two times higher in areas with the lowest versus highest socioeconomic status.
Incidence did not change during the study period.
