Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified genetic influences of many medical conditions. Now, in the first such study on nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), investigators examined histologic parameters of patients with well-characterized disease.
A subgroup of 236 patients — non-Hispanic white women (median age, 53) with biopsy-proven NAFLD — were selected from 1215 participants enrolled in the NIH-funded NAFLD Database study, a longitudinal, observation study of patients with suspected NAFLD, biopsy-proven NAFLD, or cryptogenic cirrhosis. Standard GWAS analysis was performed using multivariate logistic and linear regression analyses.
