Although bone disease is considered common in patients with cholestatic liver disease — especially primary biliary cirrhosis — research to date has not focused on primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
To investigate this issue, researchers enrolled patients with newly diagnosed PSC in a prospective cohort study to estimate the prevalence, progression over time, and predictors of bone disease in PSC. Bone-mineral density of the lumbar spine was measured at baseline and annually for up to 10 years, and results were compared with expected normal bone-density measurements based on age, sex, and ethnic group. All patients received lower endoscopy to evaluate for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
