Nonanimal stabilized hyaluronic acid with dextranomer (NASHA Dx) is a bulking agent typically used in urological procedures. However, it has also been tested as a treatment for fecal incontinence. In a prior, uncontrolled study of 34 patients with fecal incontinence, use of NASHA Dx gel as an injectable anal canal implant significantly reduced the median number of incontinence episodes per patient (from 22 to 10 per month after 1 year; P=0.004) without causing serious adverse events (Dis Colon Rectum 2009; 52:1101).
To further evaluate this approach, investigators conducted an industry-sponsored, double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial involving 206 patients treated for fecal incontinence at multiple centers in the U.S. and Europe. P…
