At present, we have no proven effective therapy for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Treatments including weight loss, insulin sensitization, and antioxidants such as vitamin E have been evaluated in many studies — most of them small and uncontrolled. In a prior randomized, controlled trial (JW Gastroenterol May 7 2010), vitamin E (800 IU/day) for 96 weeks was associated with improvement in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and both vitamin E and pioglitazone were associated with reductions in liver-enzyme levels and in hepatic steatosis. Now, researchers have evaluated the efficacy of a statin (atorvastatin) combined with two antioxidants (vitamins E and C) in individuals with NAFLD.
