Chronic inflammation seems to be a causative factor in certain cancers, and the role of inflammatory bowel disease in colon cancer is familiar to gastroenterologists. Previous attempts to relate inflammatory markers to colorectal cancer (CRC) risk have yielded equivocal results. To reexamine this issue, and to determine whether marker levels are related to the effects of aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) on CRC risk, researchers performed a nested, case-control analysis among women enrolled in the Nurses' Health Study.
