Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare chronic liver disease that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. To determine the burden of the disease and shed light on its etiology, investigators conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of PSC incidence.
Of 1669 potentially eligible studies, 8 (involving 531 patients) met all inclusion criteria. Initial analysis revealed significant heterogeneity, but after two non–population-based studies were removed, heterogeneity disappeared.
