Recent studies of human cancer cell lines and animal tumor models suggest that statins might have chemoprotective effects. However, observational studies involving humans have reported mixed results.
To evaluate a possible association between statin use and risk for liver cancer, investigators conducted a case-control study using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Among all patients ≥50, they identified 1166 patients with a first-time diagnosis of liver cancer and 1166 controls, pair-matched by age, sex, and index date. Controls were hospitalized with diagnoses that did not involve statin use. The index date was the date of cancer diagnosis for liver cancer patients and the date of hospitalization for controls.…
